Abstract

The Field Theory allows to recognize/detect the main actions and elements that come into play in a specific social sphere. Therefore, it is a suitable analytic tool to comprehend the functioning of a field of knowledge that has been insufficiently studied to this date: the preservation and restoration of the Mexican cultural heritage.

Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological approach has been utilized in two previous instances to contextualize the restoration field. Alfredo Vega was the first one, and argued that restoration is subordinate to the field of power (2008). The second analysis focused in the cultural heritage as the axis of the cultural production field subordinated to the power field (Jiménez y Sainz, 2011). The article incorporates the changes in the Mexican restoration sphere – focusing on the last decade -, setting the oldest restoration school as an example: The National School of Preservation, Restoration and Museography of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH ENCRyM). The objective of this article is to identify the major changes in the field of restoration, that have promoted its foray into the dynamics of the cultural and intellectual production, away from the idea that restoration is subordinated to power.
